RED CROSS OR CASUALTY DOGS
Dogs are trained for Red Cross work for the purposeof aiding the stretcher bearers to locate wounded com-batants after and, if circumstances permit, during the bat-tle. Searching in a given direction, the dogs are taughtto report to their guides every person found in a sittingor lying-down position. Walking and standing personsmust be ignored, sentries, patrols and marching groups in-cluded. Countless injured soldiers, seeking shelter andprotection, find hiding places which cannot be reachedor possibly arc overlooked by patrolling searchers. It iseasy to realize, then, how many lives are saved when dogs, with their keen scent and ability to find, are attached toRed Cross units.
